Box Frame Examples

A collection of bespoke box frames designed and made in the Harten workshop.

Box frames build depth between the artwork and the glazing, which changes what a frame can hold. Medals, textiles, signed shirts, ceramics and dimensional artwork all need that space, and flat works on paper often benefit from it too. Every example below came through our own workshop.

Many of these pieces are float mounted, so the artwork appears to hover inside the frame with its edges visible, a technique that suits deckled paper and objects particularly well. Others use a shadow gap, a clean line of space between the piece and the frame edge. Spacer depth, moulding profile and finish are decided per piece, and conservation or museum grade glazing is available where the contents warrant it.

Bespoke box frames cost around £350. If one of these examples is close to what you have in mind, our bespoke box framing service explains construction, materials and pricing in more detail, or you can send us a photo of your piece for a quote.
