Giclée Printing Fine Art Reproduction

Pigment printing on Hahnemühle cotton rag paper and fine art canvas, up to 1.5 metres wide on our 62 inch HP Designjet. Every paper has its own ICC profile, proofed against a calibrated monitor, so what you approve on screen is what comes off the roll. Framing, limited editions and certificates of authenticity can go in the same order.

Description

What Is A Giclée Print?

A giclée is a pigment inkjet print made on archival fine art paper or canvas and colour managed to match the original. The word is French for "to spray", and it describes how the ink is applied rather than any standard of quality.

Because giclée describes a method and not a grade, anyone can put the word on an inkjet print. What separates fine art reproduction from a poster is what goes into it: pigment inks rather than dye, an acid-free and lignin-free substrate, and colour management good enough that the reproduction holds up next to the original.

The papers we print on

Our house fine art stock is Hahnemühle Photo Rag Bright White 310gsm, a 100% cotton paper with a smooth matt surface and a light felt structure. It is the paper we specify for gallery editions. We keep a small working range in stock and order anything else a client asks for, so the list below is a starting point rather than a menu.

  • Photo Rag Bright White 310gsm, 100% cotton, smooth matt. Our house stock.

  • Photo Rag 308gsm, 100% cotton, smooth matt, minimal optical brighteners.

  • German Etching 310gsm, 100% alpha-cellulose, textured matt with a defined felt structure.

  • William Turner 310gsm, 100% cotton, heavy watercolour texture, no optical brighteners.

  • Museum Etching 350gsm, 100% cotton, natural white, no optical brighteners.

  • Photo Rag Baryta 315gsm, 100% cotton, high gloss baryta surface for photographic work.

  • Fine art canvas, varnished and stretched in house.

Every paper on that list is acid-free and lignin-free. The choice between them is about surface rather than quality: a smooth cotton rag holds fine detail and clean line work, a textured etching or watercolour paper suits painterly originals and gives the print some of the tooth the original had, and a baryta surface gives photographic work the depth and gloss of a darkroom print. Tell us what the original is and we will send you the two or three worth proofing.

How large we can print

The HP Designjet Z6200 is 62 inches wide and takes roll media, so a single print can run to 1.5 metres across by the length of the roll. Anything wider than that is printed in sections and bonded to panel, which is the normal approach for a wall-sized commercial image. For very large framed work our oversized framing team takes over at the framing stage.

What it costs

Printed as part of a framing order, an A3 or A2 giclée print is around £50 including VAT. Above A2 we price by area and by paper, because a square metre of 350gsm cotton rag and a square metre of matt stock are not the same cost. You get a fixed price before anything is printed.

Two routes are worth knowing about before you enquire. Trade, gallery and edition work is quoted per run and has no floor. For individuals commissioning a one-off, our minimum order value is £300, which in practice means a print is commissioned alongside its framing rather than on its own. Three things move the figure once you are past size: the paper, whether the piece is stretched onto canvas or left flat, and whether the run needs proofing and certification.

Who we print for

Most of our print work is reproduction for artists turning original paintings into editions, and for galleries running numbered editions with certification. Photographers use us for exhibition prints. Commercial clients use us for artwork, signage and display panels where the image has to hold up close.

Editions and authentication

For limited edition runs we can supply ArtSure edition authentication and a signed certificate of authenticity with each print. Editions are printed as a batch against one approved proof rather than reprinted piecemeal, which is what keeps the twentieth print matching the first.

Print and frame in one place

The reason most clients come to us rather than a print bureau is that the print does not then have to be packed, posted and handled again before it is framed. It goes straight from the roll into the framing workshop. We have been framing since 1974 and we are members of the Fine Art Trade Guild and the Museums Association.

How A Giclée Print Is Made

Four stages between your file and a finished print.

1. The file

Not every digital file can be printed at every size. The usual limit is resolution: an image that looks sharp on a phone screen often does not carry enough information to hold detail at a metre wide. As a working rule we want around 300 dpi at the final print size, and we will tell you what a file will and will not stand before you commit to a size.

If you are reproducing an original painting or drawing, the capture matters more than the printing. A flat, evenly lit copy shot on a proper camera gives us something to work with. We can improve a marginal file if it is the only one you have, though there is a limit to what recovery can do.

2. Colour management and proofing

Every paper takes ink differently, so each one has its own ICC profile that we have built ourselves. We soft proof against a calibrated Eizo CG277 monitor, which shows what that specific paper will do with your image before any of it is committed to a roll.

For edition work and for anything where the reproduction is being compared against an original in the room, we print test strips first. It is a cheap step that removes most of the argument later.

3. Printing

Printing runs on an HP Designjet Z6200, 62 inches wide, using a ten cartridge pigment ink set. Pigment matters here rather than being a specification detail: pigment particles sit on and in the coating and hold their colour far longer than dye inks, which is the whole reason a giclée is worth commissioning over a photo lab print.

4. Finishing

Paper prints come off the roll, are left to dry fully, and are trimmed with the border you need. If the print is going into a mount we leave enough margin to hinge it properly, and if it is being float mounted we can leave a deckled or torn edge showing.

Canvas takes a low sheen varnish for protection, is stretched onto a bespoke natural wood support with puncture protective backing, and is gallery wrapped so the image continues around the edge. Security fittings go on as standard and we have an installation service where a piece needs one. Our canvas framing page covers the tray and floating options for a stretched piece.

How long the print will last

HP rate this pigment ink set at over 100 years of display permanence on a range of media in indoor light, and over 200 years away from direct sunlight, based on testing by the HP Image Permanence Lab and Wilhelm Imaging Research. That is a manufacturer rating for an ink and paper combination under test conditions, not a guarantee we issue.

In practice what shortens a print is where it hangs and what is in front of it. Direct sun will fade a hundred year rated print in a fraction of that, and UV filtering glazing will do more for it than any upgrade to the paper. Our guide to UV protective glass covers the glazing tiers.

The framing we supply carries our 5 year guarantee.

The framing of my piece has really made a statement in our new home, for a price that was unrivalled by any local competitors.

Common questions about giclée printing

A giclée is a pigment inkjet print made on archival fine art paper or canvas and colour managed to match the original. The word is French for "to spray" and describes how the ink is applied. It is a method, not a quality standard, so what makes one worth commissioning is the specification behind it: pigment rather than dye inks, an acid-free and lignin-free substrate, and a colour-managed workflow with a paper-specific ICC profile.

Printed as part of a framing order, an A3 or A2 giclée print is around £50 including VAT. Above A2 we price by area and by paper, because heavier cotton rag costs more per square metre than matt stock. Trade, gallery and edition work is quoted per run. For individuals commissioning a one-off, our minimum order value is £300, so a print is normally commissioned alongside its framing rather than on its own.

Our house stock is Hahnemühle Photo Rag Bright White 310gsm, a 100% cotton smooth matt paper. We also print on Photo Rag 308gsm, German Etching 310gsm, William Turner 310gsm, Museum Etching 350gsm and Photo Rag Baryta 315gsm, and we will order in any paper a client specifies. All of them are acid-free and lignin-free. We also print on fine art canvas, which we varnish and stretch in house.

HP rate the pigment ink set we use at over 100 years of display permanence in indoor light, and over 200 years away from direct sunlight, based on testing by the HP Image Permanence Lab and Wilhelm Imaging Research. That is a manufacturer rating for an ink and paper combination under test conditions rather than a guarantee we issue. What determines the life of a print in a real room is where it hangs and what glazing is in front of it. UV filtering glass does more than any paper upgrade.

As a working rule we want around 300 dpi at the final print size. A 1 metre wide print therefore wants roughly 12,000 pixels across, which is more than most phone cameras produce. Send us the file before you settle on a size and we will tell you what it will hold. We can improve a marginal file if it is the only copy in existence, but there is a limit to what recovery achieves, and a proper flat copy shot of an original will always beat it.

Our HP Designjet Z6200 is 62 inches wide and takes roll media, so a single print can be up to 1.5 metres wide by the length of the roll. Larger images are printed in sections and bonded to panel, which is the standard approach for wall-sized commercial artwork. Joins become insignificant at normal viewing distance for a piece that size.

Yes, and it is the main reason clients use us rather than a print bureau. The print goes straight from the roll into the framing workshop without being packed, posted and handled again. It also means the mount, glazing and frame are specified with the print in front of us rather than to a set of measurements. We have been framing since 1974 and are members of the Fine Art Trade Guild and the Museums Association.

Yes. For limited edition runs we can supply ArtSure edition authentication and a signed certificate of authenticity with each print. Editions are printed as a batch against a single approved proof rather than reprinted piecemeal over time, which is what keeps the last print in an edition matching the first.
