Bespoke Wedding Dress Framing by Harten

Your wedding dress deserves to be displayed as a piece of art, not folded into a box in the loft. At Harten we build bespoke shadow box frames designed specifically for each dress, using conservation-grade materials and construction methods that protect the fabric from yellowing, dust and UV damage. Every frame is made from scratch in our workshop — there is no standard size or template, because no two dresses are the same.

Full-Length vs Detail Display

A full-length wedding dress display requires a large shadow box frame, often exceeding two metres in height. Harten builds oversized frames up to 4.5 metres, so full-length display is well within our capability — this is a key reason clients come to us when other framers cannot accommodate the size. If wall space is limited or you prefer a more focused presentation, a bodice display shows the top half of the dress arranged on a shaped internal form, capturing the neckline, sleeves and detailing. A third option is a carefully folded and draped arrangement that presents the dress at a smaller scale while still showing its character. We discuss each option with you before starting so the display suits both the dress and the space it will occupy.

Dress Preparation

We strongly recommend having your dress professionally cleaned before framing. Stains that are invisible now — perspiration, champagne, food — will oxidise over time and become permanent under glass. A specialist wedding dress cleaner or textile restorer can treat these safely without damaging delicate fabrics or beading. We can recommend trusted specialists if needed. Ideally, framing should begin within twelve months of the wedding to minimise any oxidation that has already started. When the dress arrives at our workshop, we inspect it carefully for any damage, loose beading, or weakened seams that need attention before mounting.

Shadow Box Construction

Wedding dresses have volume — tulle, petticoats, structured bodices and layered skirts all need space inside the frame. We build deep box frames to whatever depth the dress requires, typically between 10cm and 25cm depending on the style. Internal structures — padded forms, fabric-covered supports, and concealed brackets — hold the dress in position without stitching through the fabric. The backing board is acid-free and the interior is lined with conservation-grade fabric in a colour you choose to complement the dress. Every element inside the frame is built specifically for your dress, not adapted from a stock product.

Preservation and Protection

Fabric is one of the most light-sensitive materials we frame. UV exposure causes silk to yellow, satin to fade, and lace to become brittle. We fit UV-protective glazing as standard on every wedding dress frame, blocking over 99% of harmful wavelengths. All materials inside the frame — backing board, spacers, mounting fabric, adhesive strips — are acid-free and lignin-free to prevent chemical interaction with the dress over time. The frame is sealed with a dust cover to reduce atmospheric exposure while allowing controlled air circulation. The result is museum-grade preservation presented as a striking display piece. Including Accessories

A wedding dress frame can include far more than the dress itself. Dried or pressed bouquets, the veil, shoes, jewellery, an invitation, order of service, or a photograph from the day can all be incorporated into the display. We design layouts that give each item its own space within the frame, using individual mounts and risers for three-dimensional pieces and acid-free corners for paper items. Combined displays tell a richer story and create a single focal point rather than separate items scattered around a room. We work with you on the arrangement before building, so you see a scale drawing of the layout before anything is committed.

Sizing and Placement

A full-length wedding dress frame is a significant piece of wall art, often around 180cm tall by 80cm wide. Wall mounting requires secure fixings into masonry or timber studs — we provide specific guidance on fixing methods for your wall type. For particularly large or heavy frames, floor-standing display is an option with a purpose-built easel back. Weight is a key consideration: glass adds substantial weight at these sizes, so we offer acrylic box frames as a lightweight glazing alternative that also provides superior UV protection. We measure the intended wall space and factor in the dress dimensions to ensure the finished frame fits the location you have planned.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about wedding dress framing and preservation

We strongly recommend it. Invisible stains from perspiration, champagne, or food will oxidise over time and become permanent under glass. A specialist wedding dress cleaner can treat these without damaging delicate fabrics. Ideally, cleaning and framing should happen within twelve months of the wedding.

A full-length display typically requires a frame around 180cm tall by 80cm wide, with a depth of 10cm to 25cm depending on the dress style. Bodice-only displays are significantly smaller, usually around 80cm by 60cm. We build every frame to measure, so sizes vary based on the dress and layout.

Yes. Dried or pressed bouquets are one of the most popular additions to a wedding dress frame. We mount them on individual risers within the shadow box so they sit at the right depth alongside the dress. Other accessories like shoes, veils, invitations, and photographs can also be included.

Yellowing is caused by UV light exposure and chemical interaction with acidic materials. We fit UV-protective glazing that blocks over 99% of harmful wavelengths, and every material inside the frame — backing board, spacers, mounting fabric — is acid-free and lignin-free. The frame is sealed with a dust cover to reduce atmospheric exposure.

Yes. All our mounting methods are fully reversible. The dress is held in position with padded forms, fabric supports, and concealed brackets — nothing is stitched through the fabric or attached with permanent adhesive. If you ever want to remove the dress, we can do this in our workshop without any damage.

The cost depends on the display style (full-length, bodice, or draped), the frame size and depth, the finish, glazing type, and any additional items included. Wedding dress framing is one of our more involved projects due to the scale and internal construction required. We provide a detailed, no-obligation quote after discussing your requirements.
