The Largest Picture Frame You Can Buy in the UK

How big can a picture frame actually go? The size ceilings for ready-made and bespoke frames, what limits them, and how frames beyond 4.5 metres get built.

The Largest Picture Frame You Can Buy in the UK

The largest picture frame you can buy off the shelf in the UK is around 1.2 metres on the long edge. Most bespoke framers will build to roughly 2.7 metres. Beyond that you are into specialist territory: our workshop builds single frames up to 4.5 by 3.5 metres, and larger still in sections that are joined on site.

Those three numbers are not marketing tiers. Each one marks a real engineering ceiling, and knowing which one your artwork sits under tells you who can frame it and roughly what it will cost. Here is where each limit comes from.

The three size ceilings

Ready-made frames stop at around 1.2 metres because that is the practical limit for flat-pack materials and standard parcel couriers. Most bespoke framers stop at around 2.7 metres, which is where standard workshop machinery, glazing sheet sizes and van transport all start to run out at once. The final ceiling is ours: 4.5 by 3.5 metres is the largest single frame we have completed, and that number is set by transport and door clearance rather than by the joinery itself.

Past 4.5 metres a frame does not stop being possible. It stops being a single object. We build these in sections that travel separately and are joined on site, with the final corners completed during installation.

What actually limits frame size

Three constraints decide how big a frame can go, and they arrive in a fixed order.

Timber strength. Above 3 metres on either side, a wooden frame cannot reliably hold its own weight. Below that line, wood with a reinforced sub-frame works well and welded steel is a stylistic choice. Above it, steel becomes a structural requirement.

Glazing sheet sizes. Cast acrylic is stocked in sheets up to roughly 3,050 by 2,050mm, and joining two sheets leaves a visible seam. That is why glazing switches to polycarbonate above 2 metres: it runs to 6 metres on the long edge in a single sheet, in 6mm to 12mm thicknesses. Glass is not recommended at this scale at all. It would need to be dangerously thick and takes three people just to lift.

Transport and access. A finished frame has to leave the workshop, survive the road and pass through your building. The 4.5 metre ceiling is a doors-and-vehicles number. Where a piece is bigger than the access route, sectional construction solves what transport cannot.

The two thresholds that change everything

Two sizes matter more than any others when you are pricing or planning an oversized frame. At 2 metres on the long edge, the build moves to two-person specialist handling, the glazing switches from acrylic to polycarbonate, and delivery moves from a courier to our own van and team. At 3 metres, the structure itself changes from wood to welded steel. Everything else scales smoothly; these two points are steps.

The largest frames we have built

The biggest single frame to leave the workshop measured 4.5 by 3.5 metres. The largest glazed artwork we have completed had a glazed size of 2,630 by 1,765mm. At these sizes the engineering is as much about what you do not see: sub-frames with up to two horizontal and two vertical struts, cross bracing, and museum-grade hangers rated to 100kg.

Everything at this scale is built to order in our Bollington workshop, where we have been framing since 1974. Other framers regularly refer oversized work to us when a piece is beyond their equipment, which is a referral we take as a compliment.

What a frame this size costs

Standard oversized work, up to around A0, starts from around £500. Once the long edge passes 2 metres, the specialist build takes it from around £2,500. Fully hand-finished commissions with gilding, exotic timbers or museum glazing run to £8,000 and beyond. The size itself is rarely the main cost driver; the specification is. Our extra large picture frame cost guide breaks the tiers down in detail.

Getting it to you

Up to 2 metres, frames travel UK-wide by specialist art courier. Above that, delivery is our own van with two staff, and installation is usually bundled in, which at the top end can approach around £2,000 for delivery and hanging together. We cover how the tiers work in our guide to how extra large picture frames are delivered.

If you have a piece that other framers have turned away on size, that is usually where we start. Our large picture frames are built to any size up to 4.5 metres as a single frame, and beyond that in sections, with a 5 year guarantee on every build. Send us the dimensions and we will quote it properly.
